Includes a daguerrotype portrait of Robert Howe and an ambrotype portrait of Robert and his young wife Mary Ellen Hammond Howe (both in CASE box). Also includes a snapshot of Robert, Mary Ellen and other family members; a later portrait of Robert and an unidentified infant, perhaps a grandchild; and tintype portraits of two unidentified young women, perhaps daughters of Robert and Mary Ellen (all in PIC folder).

Robert Howe (born 1832 in New York, died 1915 in San Francisco): moved to California in 1853; worked as a prospector in the gold mines, later as an assay merchant in San Francisco; married Mary Ellen Hammond in Coulterville, Calif. in 1859; served various terms in the California State Assembly (1858-1861, 1873-1875, 1888-1890) and California State Senate (1875-1881); briefly served as Speaker of the Assembly in 1889.
